Tulongella was named by Chen and Chen (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr u Sepkoski's reference number: ZR80]. It is not extant. Its type is Tulongella xizangensis.
It was assigned to Bivalvia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Laternulidae by Chen and Chen (1976), Fang et al. (2009) and Ros-Franch et al. (2014).
