Taxonomy
Pityostrobus was named by Dutt (1916). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Pityostrobus macrocephalus. It was considered polyphyletic by Gernandt et al. (2016).

It was assigned to Gymnospermae by Lakhanpal et al. (1976); and to Pinaceae by Andrews (1970), Smith and Stockey (2002) and Gernandt et al. (2016).
