Theromorpha was named by Cope (1878). It is not extant.

It was reranked as the subclass Theromorpha by Gadow (1898), Perrier (1928) and Kuhn (1966); it was synonymized subjectively with Anomodontia by Osborn (1904); it was reranked as the superorder Theromorpha by Nopcsa (1923), Nopcsa (1928) and Roxo (1937).

It was assigned to Monozygocrotapha by Nopcsa (1928); to Reptilia by Zittel (1890), Gadow (1898), Nopcsa (1923), Perrier (1928), Swinton (1934), Kuhn (1946) and Kuhn (1966); and to Synapsida by Roxo (1937) and Haubold (1974).
