Ixodes was named by Latreille (1795). It is extant. It is the type genus of Ixodoidea, Ixodidae.

It was assigned to Riciniae by Latreille (1802); to Acarina by Scudder (1890); and to Ixodidae by Dunlop et al. (2013).
