Ectobius was named by Stephens (1835). It is extant. It is the type genus of Ectobiinae, Ectobidae.
It was assigned to Ectobiidae by Djernæs et al. (2020) and Evangelista et al. (2021); and to Ectobiinae by Theobald (1937), Statz (1939), Piton (1940), Vanschuytbroeck (1971), Evangelista et al. (2017) and Anisyutkin and Perkovsky (2024).
