Skemmatocare was named by Richter (1927) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-l D Fame-m Sepkoski's reference number: 802]. It is not extant. Its type is Otarion elegans.

It was assigned to Pteropariinae by Chernyheva (1960); to Cyrtosymbolinae by Osmólska (1962); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Proetidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
