Taxonomy
Echidna acanthion was named by Collett (1884) [also said to be 1885]. It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Echidna aculeata by Lydekker (1894); it was recombined as Tachyglossus aculeatus acanthion by Augee et al. (2006).
