Taxonomy
Drillia torosa was named by Gabb (1864). It is extant. Its type specimen is USNM 3286, a shell.

It was recombined as Pseudomelatoma torosa by Dall (1921), Oldroyd (1927), Grant and Gale (1931) and Hendy (2021).

Synonyms
  • Pseudomelatoma torosa somisensis was named by Waterfall (1929). Its type specimen is UCMP 31423, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Pseudomelatoma torosa aurantia by Grant and Gale (1931) and Grant and Gale (1931).
  • Drillia torosa aurantia was named by Carpenter (1864). It is extant. Its type locality is Port Limon, which is in a Pliocene marine siliciclastic in Costa Rica.

    It was recombined as Drillia aurantia by Ashley (1895) and Olsson (1922); it was recombined as Pseudomelatoma torosa aurantia by Oldroyd (1927) and Grant and Gale (1931); it was synonymized subjectively with Pseudomelatoma torosa by Hendy (2021).
