Cypraea tumulus was named by Heilprin (1886). Its type specimen is WFIS 861, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Erronea (Adusta) tumulus by Dolin (1991); it was recombined as Zonaria tumulus by Landau and Groves (2011).
