Lupeosaurus was named by Romer (1936). Its type is Clepsydrops gigas.

It was corrected as Luperosaurus by Romer (1937) and Carroll (1988); it was synonymized subjectively with Eryops by Schoch and Milner (2014).

It was assigned to Pelycosauria by Reisz (1986); and to Pelycosauria by Romer (1936), Romer (1937) and Carroll (1988).
