Tomistoma brumpti was named by Joleaud (1920). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Tomistoma brumpti type, which is in a Pliocene/Pleistocene terrestrial horizon in Ethiopia.
It was synonymized subjectively with Gavialis gangeticus by Boulenger (1920); it was recombined as Euthecodon brumpti by Joleaud (1920) and Ginsburg and Buffetaut (1978).
