Asperoris was named by Nesbitt et al. (2013). Its type is Asperoris mnyama. It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt et al. (2013).

It was assigned to Archosauriformes by Nesbitt et al. (2013); and to Eucrocopoda by Ezcurra (2016).
