Taxonomy
Nelsonia schesis was named by Palmer and Gatehouse (1972). Its type specimen is not listed and is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Nelsonia, Nelsonia, Paleonelsonia.

It was recombined as Paleonelsonia schesis by Özdikmen (2008).
