Taxonomy
Spatangus stella was named by Morton (1830). Its type specimen is ANSP 1491, a test, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Hemiaster stella by Clark and Twitchell (1915), Cooke (1942), Cooke (1959) and Kroh (2001).
