Laurophyllum cuspidatus was named by Pole (1992) [Referred specimens: SB-137, S113.]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is Holotype: S-113, housed in the Department of Plant Science, University of Tasmania., a leaf (Cuticle), and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Hasties, which is in an Eocene/Eocene fluvial mudstone/gravel in Australia.
