Mesaxonia was named by Marsh (1884). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Perissodactyla by Hay (1902); it was reranked as the suborder Mesaxonia by Prothero and Schoch (1989).

It was assigned to Ungulata by Gregory (1910); and to Perissodactyla by Prothero and Schoch (1989).
