Synthetodus was named by Eastman (1896) [Sepkoski's age data: teeth]. It is not extant. Its type is Synthetodus trisulcatus.

It was assigned to Ceratodontidae by Hay (1902); to Dipnoi by Campbell and Barwick (1990); and to Holocephali by Sepkoski (2002).
