Cosmoptychius was named by Traquair (1877) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant. Its type is Amblypterus striatus.
It was assigned to Cosmoptychiidae by Gardiner (1963); and to Palaeonisciformes by Sepkoski (2002).
