Paramesolepis was named by Moy-Thomas and Dyne (1938) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Platysomidae by Gardiner (1969); and to Palaeonisciformes by Sepkoski (2002).
