Styracopterus was named by Traquair (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour Sepkoski's reference number: 1066 Actual Age: C Vis]. It is the type genus of Styracopteridae.

It was assigned to Palaeonisciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Styracopteridae by Sallan and Coates (2013).
