Tegeolepis was named by Miller (1892) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is not extant. Its type is Actinophorus clarkii.

It was assigned to Palaeoniscidae by Hay (1902); and to Palaeonisciformes by Sepkoski (2002).
