Rhacolepis was named by Agassiz (1843) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti-u Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. Its type is Amblypterus olfersi.

It was assigned to Elopidae by Woodward (1901); and to Crossognathiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
