Homoscleromorpha was named by Levi (1973). It is extant.

It was reranked as the subclass Homoscleromorpha by Bambach et al. (2007); it was reranked as the phylum Homoscleromorpha by Nielsen (2012).

It was assigned to Demospongia by Sepkoski (2002) and Bambach et al. (2007); to Metazoa by Edgecombe et al. (2011); to Proepitheliozoa by Nielsen (2012); and to Porifera by Worheide et al. (2012).
