Beryx was named by Cuvier (1829) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Berycidae, Berycoidei.

It was assigned to Berycidae by Hay (1902); and to Beryciformes by Sepkoski (2002).
