Mionothropus was named by De Iuliis et al. (2011). Its type is Mionothropus cartellei.
It was assigned to Nothrotheriidae by Amson et al. (2017); and to Nothrotheriinae by De Iuliis et al. (2011) and Varela et al. (2019).
