Callorhinus was named by Gray (1859) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 746]. It is extant.
It was synonymized subjectively with Arctocephalus by Gill (1866); it was replaced with Callotaria by Palmer (1892), Allen (1902) and Trouessart (1904); it was reranked as Arctocephalus (Callorhinus) by Trouessart (1898).
