Taxonomy

Captorhinus was named by Cope (1896). It is not extant. Its type is Captorhinus angusticeps.

It was assigned to Pariotichidae by Cope (1896), Hay (1902) and Williston (1911); to Captorhinomorpha by Olson (1966); and to Captorhinidae by Case (1911), Hay (1930), Seltin (1959), Fox and Bowman (1966), Daly (1973), de Ricqlès and Taquet (1982), Carroll (1988), Modesto (1998), Modesto et al. (2007) and deBraga et al. (2019).

Ectocynodon was named by Cope (1878). It is not extant. Its type is Ectocynodon ordinatus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Pariotichus by Cope (1896) and Hay (1902); it was considered a nomen dubium by Case (1911); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Captorhinus by Heaton (1979).

It was assigned to Pariotichidae by Cope (1888) and Hay (1930).
Hypopnous was named by Cope (1896). Its type is Hypopnous squaliceps.

It was synonymized subjectively with Romeria by Eaton (1964); it was considered a nomen dubium by Case (1911); it was considered a nomen dubium by Fox and Bowman (1966); it was synonymized subjectively with Captorhinus by Seltin (1959) and Baird and Carroll (1967).

It was assigned to Pariotichidae by Cope (1896) and Hay (1902); and to Captorhinidae by Hay (1930).
Paracaptorhinus was named by Watson (1954). It is not extant. Its type is Paracaptorhinus neglectus.
