Galesphyrus was named by Broom (1914). It is not extant. Its type is Galesphyrus capensis.
It was assigned to Dromasauria by Broom (1914); to Anningiidae by Kuhn (1966); to Younginidae by Carroll (1976); to Galesphyridae by Benton (1985) and Carroll (1988); and to Neodiapsida by Bickelmann et al. (2009).
