Taxonomy
Saurosternon was named by Huxley (1868). It is not extant. Its type is Saurosternon bainii. It is the type genus of Saurosternidae.
It was assigned to Procolophonia by Broom (1913); to Saurosternidae by Benton (1985); to Paliguanidae by Estes (1983) and Carroll (1988); to Lepidosauromorpha by Gauthier et al. (1989); and to Neodiapsida by Bickelmann et al. (2009).
