Paleoheterodon was named by Holman (1964). It is not extant. Its type is Paleoheterodon tiheni.

It was assigned to Colubridae by Holman (1973) and Carroll (1988); and to Xenodontinae by Parmley and Holman (1995) and Parmley and Hunter (2010).
