Taxonomy
Atoposaurus was named by von Meyer (1850). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Karl et al. (2006).
It was assigned to Homeosauridae by Gervais (1852) and Gervais (1859); to Neosuchia by Bronzati et al. (2012); to Atoposauridae by Lortet (1892), Wellnhofer (1971), Buscalioni and Sanz (1988), Carroll (1988), Karl et al. (2006) and Tennant and Mannion (2014); and to Atoposauridae by Tennant et al. (2016).
