Taxonomy
Pecten impostor was named by Hanna (1924). Its type specimen is UCMP 11089, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Aequipecten impostor by Adegoke (1969); it was recombined as Argopecten circularis impostor by Moore (1984).
