Eoalligator was named by Young (1964). Its type is Eoalligator chunyii.
It was synonymized subjectively with Asiatosuchus by Wang et al. (2016).
It was assigned to Alligatorinae by Young (1964), Kuhn (1966) and Young (1982); to Alligatoridae by Carroll (1988); to Crocodylinae by Wu et al. (2018); and to Orientalosuchina by Massonne et al. (2019) and Shan et al. (2021).
