Ctenochasmatoidea was named by Unwin (1995). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Unwin and Lü (1997).

It was reranked as the unranked clade Ctenochasmatoidea by Unwin and Lü (1997), Unwin (2002) and Unwin (2003).

It was assigned to Pterodactyloidea by Unwin and Lü (1997) and Unwin (2002); and to Lophocratia by Unwin (2003).
