Tetraceratops was named by Matthew (1908). It is not extant. Its type is Tetraceratops insignis.
It was assigned to Sphenacodontidae by Hay (1930); to Eothyrididae by Romer and Price (1940); to Pelycosauria by Reisz (1986); to Pelycosauria by Matthew (1908) and Carroll (1988); and to Therapsida by Laurin and Reisz (1996).
