Zaglossus was named by Gill (1877). It is extant. Its type is Zaglossus bruijnii.
It was assigned to Monotremata by Glauert (1914); and to Tachyglossidae by Murray (1978), Carroll (1988), Griffiths et al. (1991), Flannery and Groves (1998), Wilson and Reeder (2005) and Rowe et al. (2008).
