Pontifactor was named by West (1974). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Jones and Beard (2023).

It was assigned to Nyctitheriinae by Hooker (1986) and Lopatin (2006); to Nyctitheriidae by West (1974), Carroll (1988) and Gunnell et al. (2008); and to Placentidentinae by Beard and Dawson (2009) and Jones and Beard (2023).
