Rooneyia was named by Wilson (1966). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Rooneyiini.
It was assigned to Omomyidae by Wilson (1966) and McKenna and Bell (1997); to Rooneyiini by Szalay (1976) and Gunnell and Rose (2002); to Euprimates by Kay et al. (2004); to Rooneyidae by Rosenberger (2006); and to Primates by Burger (2010).
