Taxonomy
Protopsalis was named by Cope (1880).

It was synonymized subjectively with Patriofelis by Wortman (1894), Matthew (1899), Osborn (1900), Hay (1902), Matthew (1909), Matthew and Granger (1915), Gazin (1957) and Guthrie (1971).

It was assigned to Hyaenodontidae by Scott (1892); to Oxyaenidae by Cope (1880), Denison (1938) and Gunnell (1998); and to Oxyaeninae by Van Valen (1967) and Stucky and Hardy (2007).
