Tapocyon was named by Stock (1934). It is not extant. Its type is Tapocyon occidentalis.
It was assigned to Miacinae by Hooker (1986); to Caniformia by Flynn and Galiano (1982) and Wesley and Flynn (2003); to Miacidae by Stock (1934), Flynn (1998) and Wesley-Hunt and Werdelin (2005); to Carnivora by Polly et al. (2006); and to Carnivoramorpha by Tomiya (2011).
