It was assigned to Melinae by Hay (1902), Bjork (1970) and Kurten and Anderson (1980); to Mustelidae by Waterhouse (1839), Schultz and Howard (1935) and Carroll (1988); to Taxidiini by Baskin (1998); and to Taxidiinae by Marmi et al. (2004) and Owen (2006).
