Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
C. W. Merriam 1930Cranium of a more massive construction than is com- monly observed among Canidae. Rostrum short, broad and shallow. Basi- cranial region broad. Co-ossified paroccipital and mastoid portion of the periotic bone particularly heavy. Bulla smooth, inflated, simple and protected along the median side by a laminate extension of the basioccipital. Bony auditory meatus well developed. Antero-posterior diameter of P! but slightly greater than that of M!. P! broadly triangular in outline at base of crown, exhibiting an approach to the hemieyonine posterior migration of the protocone. This carnassial has a relatively short metastyle and shows an incipient development suggesting a hypocone. Heel of M! expanded, with apparent posterior rotation. Mandible short and uncommonly heavy.
