Cricetidae was named by Fischer von Waldheim (1817). It is extant. Its type is Allospalax.

It was reranked as the subfamily Cricetinae by Seymour (2004).

It was assigned to Muridae by Seymour (2004); to Eumuroida by Steppan et al. (2004); to Muroidea by Wood (1958), McKenna and Bell (1997), D'Elía (2003) and Gomes Rodrigues et al. (2010); and to Rodentia by Johnson (1966), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Korth (2011) and Vianey-Liaud et al. (2014).
