Allospalax was named by Kretzoi (1970) [Allospalax plenus. Holotypus M1 sup. sin.]. It is the type genus of Cricetidae.

It was assigned to Cricetidae by Kretzoi (1970) and McKenna and Bell (1997).

Es handelt sich hier um einen früh abgespaltenen Anomalomys-Abkömmling, der sich durch Vereinfachen des primitiven Anomalomys-Bauplanes der Molaren, fortschreitende Lophodontie an Stelle der Sigmodontie der Backenzähne echter Anomalomys-Arten, dann starke Hypselodontie und eigentümlicherweise ausfüllen sämtlicher Graben, Inseln und anderen Vertiefungen der Molaren mit Zement scharf unterscheidet.
