It was synonymized subjectively with Synaptomys by Merriam (1896), Miller (1896), Preble (1899), Bangs (1900), Howell (1927), Zakrzewski (1972), Martin (1979), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Hall (1981), Martin (1989), Voorhies and Voorhies (1991) and Dalquest and Schultz (1992); it was reranked as Synaptomys (Mictomys) by Seymour (2004).
It was assigned to Cricetidae by True (1894), von Koenigswald and Martin (1984), Repenning (1992), Wood and Barnosky (1994), Repenning et al. (1995), McKenna and Bell (1997), Fejfar and Repenning (1998) and Albright (1999); and to Synaptomys by Seymour (2004).
