Carcinodon was named by Scott (1892).

It was synonymized subjectively with Oxyclaenus by Van Valen (1978).

It was assigned to Uintacyonidae by Hay (1902); and to Arctocyonidae by Scott (1892), Johnston and Fox (1984), Archibald (1998), Tabuce et al. (2011) and Atteberry and Eberle (2021).
