Diplopus was named by Kowalewsky (1873). It is not extant. Its type is Diplopus aymardi.

It was assigned to Anthracotheriidae by Carroll (1988) and McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Choeropotamidae by Erfurt and Metais (2007).
