Taxonomy
Leptotragulus was named by Scott and Osborn (1887). Its type is Leptotragulus proavus. It is the type genus of Leptotragulinae.
It was assigned to Hypertragulidae by Peterson (1919); to Leptotragulinae by Hay (1902), Matthew (1908) and Gazin (1955); and to Protoceratidae by Scott and Osborn (1887), Carroll (1988), Prothero (1998) and Prothero and Ludtke (2007).
