Dissacus
Taxonomy
Dissacus was named by Cope (1881) [sometimes said to be 1884, but 1881 is supported by Matthew 1915a, Matthew 1937, Simpson 1937a and Winterfeld 1982; and apparently the name was used in combination "Dissacus carnifex" in 1882, before transferral of genotypic species navajovius to the genus in 1884!]. It is not extant. Its type is Mesonyx navajovius. It was considered paraphyletic by Geisler and McKenna (2007).
It was assigned to Mesonychinae by Szalay and Gould (1966) and Zhou et al. (1995); and to Mesonychidae by Cope (1881), Scott (1892), Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Chow et al. (1973), Chow et al. (1977), Carroll (1988), McKenna and Bell (1997), Gingerich (1998), Archibald (1998), Thewissen et al. (2001), Geisler and McKenna (2007), Rose et al. (2012) and Solé et al. (2018).
