Synoplotherium was named by Cope (1872). Its type is Synoplotherium lanius.
It was synonymized subjectively with Mesonyx by Hay (1902).
It was assigned to Mesonychinae by Szalay and Gould (1966) and Zhou et al. (1995); and to Mesonychidae by Cope (1872), Hay (1930), Carroll (1988), McKenna and Bell (1997), Gingerich (1998), Archibald (1998), Thewissen et al. (2001) and Tomiya et al. (2021).
It was synonymized subjectively with Mesonyx by Hay (1902).
